Canon EOS 7D

The Canon EOS 7D is an 18.0 effective megapixel APS-C crop CMOS digital single-lens reflex camera made by Canon. It was announced on 1 September 2009 with a suggested retail price of US$1,699. Its particularly notable features are HD video recording, its 8.0 frames per second continuous shooting, new viewfinder which offers 1.0X magnification and 100% coverage 19 point auto-focus system, movie mode, and built-in Speedlite transmitter.

Features

[edit]Autofocus and metering

The 7D has 19 autofocus points arranged in a horizontal diamond pattern. The AF system is a new design which uses a translucent LCD display in the viewfinder. The camera uses TTL 63 zone color sensitive metering system with four variations (evaluative, center-weighted, partial, spot) and exposure compensation of −3 EV to +3 EV in steps of 1/3 EV.E-TTL II flash metering is provided. The translucent LCD can also display guide lines and the spot metering area circle. As with most other video-capable DSLRs, the Canon EOS 7D’s autofocusing function does not work while recording video. Instead, you can only trigger a contrast-detect AF cycle before recording process by hitting the AF button on the camera's rear panel. You can manually focus the lens during a recording.

[edit]Shutter

The shutter is rated to 150,000 shots, and is capable of speeds up to 1/8000 sec, with a flash sync speed of 1/250 sec.

[edit]Ergonomics

The 7D has roughly the same dimension as the 5D Mark II, with the button layout having gone through an update. It also features a 100% viewfinder with 1x magnification.
The 7D was the first Canon camera with a dedicated movie mode switch, the preceding 5D Mark II and 500D movie recording being done in live view.

[edit]Speed

The dual Digic IV processors let the 7D reach 8 frames per second continuous shooting; the buffer throughput allows up to 94 frames in large JPEG mode, and up to 15 frames in RAW. A future firmware update announced by Canon in June 2012 may increase the buffer size to 26 RAW frames.

[edit]Firmware update

In August 2012 new firmware v2.0 will be released with the following enhancements:
  • Improved maximum burst for RAW images (up to 25)
  • In-camera RAW image editing
  • In-camera Image Rating
  • In-camera JPEG resizing
  • Maximum Auto ISO setting (ISO 400-6400)
  • Manual audio level adjustment in movie recording
  • GPS compatibility
  • File name customisation
  • Time zone settings
  • Faster scrolling of magnified images
  • Quick control screen during playback

[edit]Awards

The Canon EOS 7D won the 2010–2011 European Advanced SLR Camera and the Technical Image Press Association Best DSLR Expert awards.

[edit]Video

The Canon EOS 7D's video functions offers an unusually strong feature set that gives the photographer/videographer more control over the videos they create. The camera also offers the ability to record audio from an external source. Both shutter and aperture are available for manual control, and the 7D also provides multiple frame rate options, including three that match the HD television timing specs. Like most DSLR modes, the Canon 7D neglects endless autofocus during video recording, which is a great concern for advanced amateurs with pros likely to focus manually nonetheless. Separate movie clips that are captured by the Canon EOS 7D are limited to twelve minutes in the high definition 1080p and 720p modes, or 24 minutes in the standard definition VGA mode.
The Canon 7D has acquired significance in the independent filmmaking world as an affordable alternative to digital cinema cameras. The camera was used on feature films, such asBlack Swan, Stanley Ka Dabba. and Vazhakku Enn 18/9

Canon EOS-1D Mark IV

The EOS-1D Mark IV is a professional 16.1 effective megapixels digital single lens reflex camera (DSLR) camera bodyproduced by Canon. The EOS-1D Mark IV is the successor of the Canon EOS-1D Mark III and was announced on 20 October 2009, just four days after Nikon announced the D3s. It is the first Canon APS-H format DSLR to feature HD video recording at 1080p resolution. The Mark IV will be discontinued after the release of the Canon EOS-1D X.

Canon 5D Mark 3

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is a 22.3-megapixel full-frame CMOS digital single-lens reflex camera made by Canon. It succeeds the EOS 5D Mark II and was announced on 2 March 2012, the 25th anniversary of the announcement of the first camera in the EOS line, the film-based EOS 650. The Mark III went on sale later in March with a retail price of US$3499 in the U.S., £2999 in the UK, and €3569 in the Eurozone.

Changes compared to EOS 5D Mark II

  • 22.3 megapixels (5760 × 3840 pixels), compared to 21.1 megapixels (5,616 × 3,744 pixels)
  • DIGIC 5+ image processor, compared to DIGIC 4
  • 100–25600 ISO (expandable to H1 (51200), H2 (102400)), compared to 100–6400 ISO (expandable to H1 (12800), H2 (25600))
  • 61 Point AF + 41 Crosstype AF compared to 9 Point AF + 6 Assist Points. The Mk III's autofocus system is inherited from the recently announced EOS-1D X, and marks the first time since the EOS-3 film SLR that Canon has put its top-of-the-line autofocus system in a non-1-series body.[3]
  • 6 frames per second continuous shooting compared to 3.9 frame/s
  • TTL, full aperture, 63 zones compared to TTL, full aperture, 35 zones
  • Silent, low vibration TTL shooting modes (single shot or 3 frames/s), compared to live-view-only silent shooting modes.
  • 100% viewfinder, compared to 98% coverage
  • Larger 3.2-inch (81 mm) LCD with 3:2 aspect ratio, compared to 3.0-inch (76 mm) at 4:3. In turn, this means that the native still images of the Mk III completely fill the screen, while the Mk II's native images are displayed with a black border on the bottom of the LCD. Also, while HD video remains letterboxed on the Mk III LCD, as on the Mk II, the 3:2 ratio allows more of the screen to be used for video display.[4]
  • Headphone out to monitor audio, the previous one having none.
  • Dual card slots—one CompactFlash (CF) with full UDMA support, and one SD (including SDHC and SDXC cards, but does not exploit the UHS-I speed class). The Mk II has only one CF slot.

Known defects

On 13 April, 2012, Canon has officially acknowledged the top LCD backlight affecting the meter in certain dark environments. According to Canon's product advisory.
In extremely dark environments, if the LCD panel illuminates, the displayed exposure value may change as a result of the AE sensor’s detection of light from the LCD panel.
Canon suspended shipping new units so as to implement a quick fix on all cameras in retailers' inventory. Any body shipped after the first week of May 2012 likely has the fix already applied. Early shipped bodies will be fixed by Canon for free. The fix reportedly consists of a patch of black tape.
